Organising your tool shed.

Taking time to organise your tool shed will pay you dividends every time you come to do a home improvement job.

Many people are lucky enough to have a whole shed to put their tools in ,but other have to make do with a corner at the back of the garage. Whichever you have available to you, sorting it into a logical order will make finding the right tool for the job much easier. Find something quickly and you'll avoid starting the job in a bad mood before you've even properly begun!

Firstly, decide on the types of tools you have, and the sort of jobs you are likely to undertake. You might divide your tools into plumbing, electrical, woodwork, garden and other', for example.

Now, decide how much room you are going to set aside for each of these areas. Work out what sort of storage you will need shelves, racks, drawers or just an open area. If you have lots of different screws and tiny bits and pieces, you will need to find a way of storing them efficiently. You can use custom-made holders, or you could find used tins or jars to put them in. Screw the lids of jam jars to the underside of shelving for extra storage space. Don't forget the roof space. You can screw hooks into wooden beams to hang things from. Hang string from two nearby beams to hold long poles or rods.

Now, start to fill up your spaces. Put the largest things near the back, along with things that you don't use very often. Make sure that you don't stack things up too high for them to be safe, or too deep that you will never find things again.

If you have things that won't be used for along time, for example Christmas decorations, then use boxes. Tuck them in tight and label them well. If you have light things, you can lay the boxes on their sides, open end to the front, to act as make-shift shelving units.

Oddments of wood and large items can be stacked up against the wall as long as they won't fall down on anyone.

Once you have your tool shed organised, it is worthwhile taking a bit of time to keep it this way. Clean and do any routine maintenance on your tools before you put htem away and they will last you many years.
