This may come as a bit of a shock to some gardeners, but a potting shed can be used for more than simply sitting in, watching your garden and having a cup of tea! While this is a completely legitimate use of your shed, I have a few more suggestions as to why you absolutely need a potting shed.
Growing your garden:
The potting shed is the ideal medium to begin raising seeds and stocking your garden with home grown plants. Potting sheds usually have large windows that take up almost the whole of the front side. If a bench is placed beneath the windows then plenty of sunlight can be allowed in to allow you to propagate your own plants.
The potting shed is the ideal compromise between a normal shed and a greenhouse. It allows you to raise seedlings and keep tender plants in it, while remaining warmer during cold spells as the wood naturally absorbs and slowly releases the suns warmth. It may be that you aren't able to leave seedlings in your potting shed throughout their lives without moving them into the brighter confines of a greenhouse. But there is no where better to begin your propagation then in a well lit and situated potting shed.
Storage:
If you are only going to be buying one outside building then a potting shed means you can use it for raising your plants like a greenhouse (see above), but that it is still essentially a shed. Part of your shed can easily be transformed into a home for a range of your tools and gardening equipment. Racks and shelving can be erected to take bikes and anything else you wish to remove from the confines of your home.
Home business:
If it's big enough anything is possible. Why not use your light and airy potting shed as a space for you to start or continue your home business. All the reasons that make it the ideal place to grow plants and nurture your garden, also make it ideal for you to work in: It's close to home, light and spacious, and it comes with excellent views.
If you are self-employed them it could become a wonderful outside office, away from the distractions of the house. It could even be a workshop or unit, allowing you to perfect your craft. Whatever it might be, the potting shed can make a relaxing and functional space within which to work.
Save your marriage:
But what if you don't garden, or want to raise your own plants, have the need for more storage, and like the commute to work?
In a recent article American researchers showed that married couples are less likely to divorce or separate if they have a garden with a shed, specifically a potting shed! Men feel they can escape the stresses of the home and assert authority within the potting shed. While women welcome the space and time away form their husband. The need for a potting shed has surely never been greater.
